It’s nice to meet you!
Hi, I’m Logan. Well…ok…I guess I’m supposed to introduce myself as Dr. Frederickson. Anyway…I thought you might want to know little about me before you come and tell me all your deepest secrets…
I was raised by a coach and an athletic trainer. This gave me a desire to help others, a love of honorable competition, and a relentless drive to learn and to teach. I think it was pretty natural that I set my sights on becoming a doctor from a very young age.
I had an absolute blast in my own humble career as a grade school and high school athlete. It wasn’t because of the glory; there really wasn’t much of that, lol! Mostly, I was hooked on the challenge of pushing myself to improve, learning to face my fears head on without flinching, and tackling my own weaknesses. See what I did there? Sports…TACKLING my weakness…sigh…
Yes, I have a habit of making bad puns and dad-jokes. Consider yourself warned!
Anyway…I strongly believe that sports teach our youth important life lessons and push them to achieve their potential in ways that no other experience can fully match. That’s why I get so excited about my role as Baker’s team physician. I am grateful for the opportunity to support our young athletes in their own journeys of growth and learning. I get to teach them how to reduce the chance of injury and help them recover from injuries so that they can make the very most of their sports experience. How cool is that?!
Getting that kind of opportunity, but with patients of all ages makes my job one that I wouldn’t trade for any other! Whether its talking to young parents and making office visits as fun as I can for their babies and toddlers, or helping kids and teenagers pick on their parents while helping those same parents knock a little sense into their kids in a non-threatening way, or helping adults and the young-at-heart navigate the difficult waters of preventive health and disease-specific management, I have found that the universal tool, or master key, is information.
Clear, understandable information. Using real words (Novel Concept). Not fancy explanations full of medical jargon finished off with some version of “just do what I say, and you’ll thank me later”. Not ‘dumbed-down’, condescending explanations that oversimplify things and don’t give you the tools to manage the complexities of your health and medical problems. Humans are complex. Life is messy. We all live healthier, more rewarding lives when we understand 1.) the problems facing us, 2.) what tools are available to us and 3.) how to use those tools to cope with the problems.
I discovered a long time ago that I have a passion and a gift for teaching in a way that is tailored to individuals and presenting in a way that allows real learning and meaningful understanding to happen. This usually results in an experience that most of my patients actually enjoy and nearly always appreciate. Even if it means they have to suffer through my less-than-artistic whiteboard drawings. Lots of drawings. And bad puns. And lame dad-jokes…and shall we say, memorable (spelled s-t-r-a-n-g-e) analogies. And did I mention the drawings?...
I approach my job as a primary care physician with the radical expectation that my patients should leave my office with fewer questions than they arrived with. And with more tools to manage their health than they had when they stepped into my office.
Most of my patients have heard, or will hear, me make the following analogy: When it comes to your health, I am NOT the captain of the ship. You are. I’m the guy up in the crow’s nest pointing out obstacles, and the surest routes to get through them. I have a better vantage point, but I’m NOT giving the commands or controlling the rudder. I don’t even decide where the ship is going. I make recommendations based on information that I spent a lot of time and money to learn. But the final decision is yours. Once I’m sure I understand what the desired destination is (Your health goals), I do my best to provide accurate information on how to get there, and I help provide tools if needed. Those tools can be any number of things. Dietary changes, specific exercises (or…actually getting exercise…), prescription medications if needed, specialist referrals, etc, (TOOLS).
There are a plenty of available health care providers, and the vast majority are well-educated, keep themselves up to date, and provide competent medical advice.
When you visit Elkhorn Family Medicine you get all that, but far more than just a doctor’s visit, you will have an experience that puts needed health information and tools firmly in your grasp, in a way that leaves you looking forward to the next office visit. Imagine what it would feel like to WANT to go to the doctor! More importantly, the experience will give you the confidence to be the captain of your own health, not just a passenger along for the ride, or worse yet, a crew member just dutifully following orders.
What's the Experience You Want to Have?
"I absolutely dislike going to the Doctors office! I've seen Dr. Frederickson twice now, never have I dealt with a physician so eager to explain things so in depth. He's professional, educating, and informative."
" Logan Frederickson addressed all of my questions and concerns in a professional and caring manner. The medical assistant was wonderful, too. Baker City, Oregon is fortunate to have Dr. Logan Frederickson in our community. We need more doctors like him staying and working here."
